Thanks for this interesting post. I do have to say, though, that the U.S. is NOT the "freest" country in the world by a long shot, and I'm not sure it's ever been great. Although most Americans have no idea of what or where Canada is, we have a much healthier democracy than the States and every bit as much freedom. As do Australia, New Zealand and numerous European countries. The myth of American exceptionalism is something that needs to be let go of.

I will, though, argue that America IS great. It's certainly not the greatEST. Of course it has major flaws and appalling actions in its history. But I'd rather live here than in many other countries without human rights and environmental protections. And those things are, for me, worth fighting for.
